The Tale of Dribble

Dribble (also known as Tubby), is my more than 6-years-old turtle who is bigger than the palm of your hand. He has always been quiet and reserved, but recently I've been noticing that he's quite adventurous and an excellent escape artist.
Let's take today, for example.
I took Dribble's tank outside to clean it. I left the turtle in the living room and built a wall around him using my 4 yr-old nephew's toys.  As I finished emptying the tank, I decided to go back inside to check on Dribble. Imagine my surprise when I saw Dribble standing cooly in the entrance of the door. I glanced at the wall and saw that he had managed to knock one of the toys down and climbed over it.
I chuckled and shook my head, and bent down to pick Dribble up. "You silly escape artist, you!"
I took him outside with me and set him on the grass while I scrubbed his rocks. I looked over to see him racing under the fence! "Hey! Where do you think you're going?" I scooped him up and set him back down in the grass again. Busily rinsing his tank, I turned again to see him rushing away from me and near the dogs' fenced-in area.

A bit annoyed now, and worried that the dogs might eat him, I took him inside and placed him inside my nephew's Easter basket. "I'll be right back," I said to Dribble.
Finished cleaning his tank, I carried it back inside and set it on top of the bookshelf where it belonged. Then I looked at where I had set him  - the basket was turned over and Dribble was nowhere to be seen.
Panic rose in my chest. "Dribble?!" I called. "Dribbleee!" I looked around the living room, including the corners behind the couch. Could he have gone outside? I dashed towards the porch. No, I would have seen him.
I hurriedly searched for him, thinking, "Oh no, oh no, I lost my turtle!"
I went into the dining room and looked under the table. Where could he have gone? "Dribble! Where are you?" I called again.
Then I turned my head towards the kitchen - and saw Dribble in the middle of the kitchen floor, gazing at the sink and all around him.
Relief flooded me. "Dribble! There you are!" I picked him up and frowned at him. "You silly, adventurous turtle."
I placed him inside his safe, clean, fresh tank and sat down. And that's when it hit me.

Dribble reminded me so much of teenagers. His tank was the safest place; he had food, shelter, and everything he needed. But he wanted to go explore the outside world, to places he's never been before, even if meant there might be odd obstacles in the way.
Just like teenagers. They're all cooped up at home, where it's nice and safe and contains all their basic needs - food, water, shelter, etc. But they want to go explore the outside world, where it can, indeed, be not so safe at all.  They want to leave home and be adventurous!
It's not that Dribble didn't appreciate his home. He just wants to be free and find new experiences. And I, his owner, like a parent, are too afraid to let him free, worried that he might not have knowledge to survive in the outside world. And just like a parent, we're both right in a way :)
And this, my friends, is The Tale of Dribble.
